Natural deodorant vs antiperspirant: how to choose and what to expect when you switch

Natural deodorant is a cosmetic product that softens the odour that comes with sweat, but it does not stop or block sweating itself. If you are looking for natural deodorants, take a look at the Dejko solid deodorant, fresh or let our Advisor guide you to a scent and a form that suit you.

Natural deodorant and antiperspirant: what is the difference?

An antiperspirant contains aluminium compounds, such as aluminium chlorohydrate, which temporarily form a gel plug in the upper layer of the skin and narrow the openings of the sweat glands. As a result, less sweat reaches the surface and therefore there is less moisture under the arm. This type of deodorant works in a completely different way: it does not restrict the sweat glands in any way and lets the body sweat as it naturally does. Its job is to work with the result of sweating, that is, the odour that appears when sweat meets the bacteria normally present on the surface of the skin. The way aluminium compounds act on sweat glands is also described in more detail in studies on the effect of aluminium salts on sweat glands (source: PubMed database). The choice between the two types is a matter of personal preference, not a contest over which one is "better".

What natural deodorant is made of

Good natural underarm care is built on plant and mineral ingredients instead of aluminium salts and synthetic fragrances. Dejko solid deodorant, fresh contains cetyl alcohol, grape seed oil, arrowroot root extract, kaolin, oat silk, zinc oxide and Litsea cubeba essential oil, which gives it a fresh citrus scent. It contains no baking soda, which can irritate some people's underarm skin. Dejko cream deodorant, fresh is built on shea butter, coconut oil and corn starch, which helps absorb moisture, with the same Litsea cubeba scent. Zinc oxide and corn starch in both formulas help soften the odour that comes with sweat, and the formulation remains purely cosmetic, so it works only on the look and feel of the skin, not on processes inside the body.

The transition period when switching to natural deodorant

When you swap a familiar antiperspirant for this type of product, the skin under your arms and its microflora need a little time to get used to the change. For the first days to weeks you may notice a different feeling of freshness from the one you are used to, simply because the body is no longer sweating through narrowed openings but naturally. This is nothing dramatic, just a period while the skin adapts to a new ritual. It helps to reach for cotton clothing during this time, apply the deodorant to clean, dry skin and give yourself time, usually one to two weeks, to form a new sense of what is normal for you. Patience works better here than fighting your skin or switching between several products at once, which makes adaptation harder rather than easier.

  • Do not switch between several products in the first week, so your body can more easily tell what suits it.
  • Apply to clean, dry skin, as damp underarms reduce both the grip and the scent of the deodorant.
  • Choose cotton and breathable clothing while your body gets used to the change.
  • During physical effort or in hot weather, take your deodorant with you in case you want to reapply.
  • Do not be alarmed if you feel a different kind of freshness in the first days, it is a normal part of getting used to it.

How to choose: cream or solid natural deodorant?

Both forms have their place, and the choice depends mostly on the feeling you like on your skin. A cream deodorant is applied with your fingers, has a softer, richer texture and suits more sensitive skin in particular, which will also appreciate the light hydration from plant oils and butters. A solid deodorant is applied with a twist-up mechanism, much like a classic one, dries on the skin faster and leaves no greasy feeling on clothes. For men who like woody and spicy scents, there is the Dejko cream deodorant for men with cedarwood and bergamot. Try both forms on a small area of skin and see which suits you better. It is not a choice for life, and you can change it whenever you like.

Your morning application can become a short moment for yourself rather than a quick task on the way out of the door. Apply the deodorant slowly, notice the scent of Litsea cubeba essential oil, which recalls a blend of lemon and orange, and give it time to settle in. Store it at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and sources of heat, so that both the solid and the cream form keep their consistency and scent for longer. If you have sensitive skin, first do a small test on your forearm and wait a day before applying the product to your underarm for the first time.

What natural deodorant will not do and what to expect

This type of underarm care does not offer the same thing as an antiperspirant, and that is fine, because it has a different aim. It does not promise dry underarms for 24 hours, because it does not block sweating, it only softens the odour that comes with it. On physically demanding days or in hot weather you can therefore reapply, or keep your deodorant in your bag. This does not mean the product does not work, only that it works with the body differently from the product you were used to until now. A realistic expectation is a gentle, natural feeling of freshness supported by the pleasant scent of essential oils, not the complete absence of sweat. For many women this is exactly what they look for when moving to natural cosmetics: fewer interventions in the body and more room for it to work in its own way.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between a natural deodorant and an antiperspirant?

An antiperspirant contains aluminium compounds that temporarily narrow the openings of the sweat glands and reduce the amount of sweat on the surface of the skin. This type of deodorant does not restrict sweating, it works only with the odour that appears when sweat meets bacteria on the skin. The choice between them is a personal preference, not a question of which one is "right".

How long does the transition period to natural deodorant last?

Getting your underarm skin used to a new type of product usually takes one to two weeks, and for some women a little longer. It helps to wear cotton clothing, apply to clean, dry skin and be patient instead of switching between several products. After this period the body usually gets used to the new feeling of freshness.

Is a cream or a solid natural deodorant better?

Neither form is better for everyone, it depends on the feeling you prefer on your skin. The cream is softer and suits more sensitive skin, while the solid dries faster and leaves no marks on clothes. The best way to find out which suits you is to try both forms.

Does natural deodorant contain baking soda?

Dejko solid deodorant, fresh, contains no baking soda, which will be appreciated especially by women whose underarm skin is irritated by this ingredient. Instead it relies on kaolin, oat silk and zinc oxide. When choosing a natural deodorant, it is always worth checking the ingredients directly on the label or the product page.

Why does natural deodorant let the body sweat?

Sweating is a natural function of the body that helps regulate temperature, and this type of deodorant does not interfere with it. It deals only with the accompanying odour, not with sweating itself. If it is the amount of sweat that bothers you rather than the odour, that is more a matter of personal preference for the form of cosmetics than something a product can change. If excessive sweating troubles you in everyday life, talk to a doctor, as it may be a separate matter unrelated to your choice of deodorant.
