It can retain water very well. When the sponge absorbs water, its surface is covered with a layer of water.
This water layer on the sponge's surface acts as a so-called buffer for the skin, creating a barrier between the sponge and the skin. Thanks to this, the skin is never in direct contact with the fibers and will not be scratched or damaged even during intensive washing.
