How to take cold-pressed edible oils
Do not heat cold-pressed oils; a high temperature would take away their taste and valuable substances. Take them by the spoonful or add them to a salad, quark, porridge or a finished dish. In the Altai tradition, cedar oil is taken by the spoonful once a day and sea buckthorn oil one to three times a day by the teaspoon. The oils are not a substitute for a varied diet. If you are taking medication, or are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
Which oil for the kitchen
Hemp oil has a gentle nutty taste and suits dressings. Mustard oil is more distinctive and brightens vegetables and potatoes. Flaxseed oil is traditionally served with quark and boiled potatoes. Cedar oil is gentle and nutty, and goes well with a leafy salad.
How to store oils
Protect the oil from light and heat and close the bottle well after use. Keep it in a cool, dark place and use an opened bottle by the date shown on the packaging. The smaller 100 ml size suits you if you are only trying an oil for the first time.
Oils in autumn and winter
A spoonful of oil at breakfast is a simple winter ritual. If you cannot get used to the taste of oil, you will find flaxseed oil in capsules too. Siberian chaga or mumio also go well with Altai oils.
